China's State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in Ethiopia on an official visit and maintained that his country will not interfere in Ethiopia's internal affairs. He added that China is opposed to any foreign powers meddling in the ongoing conflict in the African country.
Wang made the comments on Wednesday when he met with Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen in Addis Ababa. Wang also called for dialogue, a truce, and a political solution to the crisis among the conflicting parties in Ethiopia. He said China is willing to help the African country to restore peace under the premise of respect for Ethiopia's sovereignty.
Mekonnen praised China's position of not interfering, saying the Ethiopian government is still making efforts towards a political solution to the conflict. "Addis Ababa is opposed to any foreign powers to meddle in their domestic affairs under the name of democracy and human rights," he added.
He said that the Ethiopian government will also protect Chinese citizens living in the country, to make sure that their stay and work are not interfered with.
